Hopi Ear Candling
Ear Candling (also known as thermo-auricular therapy) is a complementary therapy that aims to help symptoms associated with the ear, nose and throat, to promote deep relaxation and help to relieve stress and calm the mind. Since ancient times, many cultures including the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks have used the traditional natural therapy of Ear Candling on a spiritual level, to purify and cleanse the aura.
Hopi Ear Candling can be enjoyed for relaxation purposes, helping to relieve irritability and stress, but the process may be helpful to improve conditions such as sinusitis, vertigo, tinnitus, snoring, excessive or compacted ear wax, headaches and migraine, catarrh and sinus problems. Some people have ear candling carried out before air travel, reporting a reduction in ear pain on take-off and landing. Many people report an enhanced sense of smell and hearing which might take a few minutes to adjust to.
A hollow cylinder made from unbleached cotton or muslin which has been coated in natural ingredients including beeswax and essential oils is lit and placed gently into the ear canal. This is believed to stimulate the ear and facilitate the removal of excess wax and impurities and equalise pressure. As the candle burns down, a soft crackling sound combined with the pleasant feeling of warmth from both the candle and the reassurance of the therapist’s touch make this a deeply relaxing treatment.
After the candles have burned down, a pressure point and lymphatic drainage massage of the face is carried out, complementing the effects of the ear candling by helping to release congestion in the sinuses and ears.
